The holiday season is fast approaching and if the thought of all those extra expenses makes you cringe, you’re not alone. A recent survey found that 52% of consumers say holiday shopping causes them financial anxiety. This is something that even I can relate to.
The truth is, no matter how well I budget for the holidays, there are some expenses I just can’t predict and they cause me to spend more than I plan to. It may not be by a lot–and I certainly don’t charge anything that I can afford to pay off right away–but it’s enough to make me feel anxious. Whether it’s that last minute gift I forgot to buy and don’t have time to shop around for the best price or the extra take-out orders I place because I’m working late on holiday pitches, there are unexpected costs that creep up all season long.
This is one of the biggest reasons it’s so important to me to find every way possible to save money, especially when shopping on daily essentials and all those seasonal purchases. When I am able to save on one thing, I have more to spend on another. Plus, this allows for a little cushion room in my budget for those unexpected extras. The more flexibility I have in my finances, the less stressed I am when an unplanned purchase or emergency pops up, whether it’s during the holidays or any other time of the year. And, this is something everyone needs to think about as we head into the most expensive season of the year. Otherwise, it’s easy to rack up debt when you’re spending goes into overdrive and you’re not prepared to manage it.
Not only is it important to limit wasteful spending and impulse purchases (something that can be rather hard to control during the holidays!), but employing a few savvy shopping strategies can ensure you save money and get the lowest price on whatever you’re buying. Comparing prices and looking for coupons are two simple yet crucial steps to finding the best deals at any given time. Since retailers release new sales daily, following favorite stores and brands on social media or signing up for their e-newsletters will alert you to the newest discounts when they become available. This also brings me to another important tip: Trying to figure out when a retailer will release a new sale or coupons can sometimes feel like a game. Since stores are constantly changing prices throughout the day and week (especially over the holidays), you may be worried about missing out on a sale. Luckily, there are tools that can help you overcome this.
One in particular that I really like is Edison Mail’s Price Alert. Edison Mail, available for free on both iOS and Android devices, is an AI-based independent mail app, offering private and secure mailbox management, with cool features like Price Alert that helps shoppers get money back for online purchases they’ve already made. Using the tool is easy, too. Once you download and sign up for Edison Mail, simply turn on Price Alert to start tracking online purchases from stores such as Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Old Navy or other U.S. retailers that often fluctuate prices online. The tool automatically monitors items you’ve purchased online by tracking digital receipts in your inbox and notifies you of any prices drops of more than $1. If your eligible for a price adjustment, they will send you a pre-filled email template with details on how to painlessly request the refund.
Since the app only monitors stores offering a price protection policy such as Best Buy, Target, Bed Bath and Beyond and more, submitting the refund request is a surefire way to get money back for your purchase.
With all that you have to remember to do during the holidays, tracking sales is one less thing you have to worry about now. And, knowing there’s a tool like Price Alert that ensures you get the best possible price on whatever you already bought will ease the financial anxiety you’re feeling this time of year. Afterall, the money you get back on holiday gifts and other purchases can help cover all those unexpected expenses that will inevitably pop up this season.
